Road Rash!!!

I had the great pleasure of learning about the latest products for looking after road rash. Unfortunately the experience was a bit more first hand than I would have liked but I did learn some new stuff.

Mepitel Dressings

Road rash certainly isn’t life threatening but it’s painful and I find the worst part about it is the morning shower. Taking the old dressing off and putting on new ones is painful, and the water in the shower burns and basically is a miserable experience.

Enter the mepitel dressing. What this product is, essentially, is a synthetic skin graft. It’s a mesh like silicone layer that you put right next to the skin and then cover with a basic gauze dressing. The best part is it stays in place for 14 days. All you have to do is change the gauze. If the cut is dirty and you want to use an antibiotic cream or spray (see below) just put it on over the mepitel layer.

What is great about these dressings is that they keep the gauze from sticking to the wound, but they don’t stick to the wound either. If they are getting grungy you can easily and painlessly remove them and give them a rinse under the tap. Then just re-apply and cover with fresh gauze.

It also speeds up the formation of a good scab by creating little islands of granulation tissue. I certainly felt like the injuries I had closed much faster than usual.

Many online pharmacies carry the patches, your local pharmacy could order it for you too. They aren’t cheap but they are worth having in your first aid kit. They come in packs of 10 for about $80. So split a pack with a buddy and hopefully you never need them!!
