Welcome to the race guide. Here you can find information about how to get started with racing, links to this year’s calendar of events, and below you will find FEATURED RACE VIDEOS highlighting some of great events we have going on here in Alberta. A complete guide to all the major races in Alberta can be found on the Alberta Bicycle Associations website.

Races can be divided into two categories, sanctioned and unsanctioned. The sanctioned events count for points towards the Alberta Road Cup, as well as towards ability level upgrade points. As you collect points you move up from Cat 5 (where all amateurs must start) to Category 4 and so on. These are big events and are usually held on the weekend. To visit the ABA’s calendar of events click here.

Unsanctioned events are usually smaller midweek events that don’t count for points towards your upgrade or the Alberta Road Cup. You usually can choose what ability level you want to race in (sandbagging is very poor form.)  This is a great place to cut your racing teeth as the environment is decidedly casual with nothing on the line other than bragging rights. You don’t usually need to be on a team to race in these events, but it’s always more fun to race on a team! The cost is usually low and is there to cover the costs of insurance and any expenses.
Edmonton and Calgary host a variety of midweek events, click on the ABA link here to find out more. Also Calgary Crankmasters run a great midweek road racing series and a collection of unsanctioned weekend events. To learn more click here.
